AT '18 "Hiawassee Happiness"
Day #9 Sassafrass Gap to Dick's Creek Gap
March 17, 2018
Early this morning, Knope and I heard the Florida Boys packing up in the dark to catch the first early morning shuttle to the motel. A huge clap of thunder shook the ground and a bolt of lightning lit up the tent right before it started pouring rain. We gladly snuggled back down into our sleeping bags and went back to sleep for a few more hours to catch the second shuttle. When our alarm went off, it was still drizzling but not pouring. We pushed the last 6 miles to Hiawassee and it was so hard. I was so hungry since I shorted myself on food this section. Thankfully Knope shared some of her tortillas and peanut butter with me, I literally never tasted anything so good in my life.
Knope had horrible foot pain coming down the mountain and started crying, I felt horrible for her. Eventually the road came into sight and we literally jumped for joy. We crossed the road, plopped down on the ground in the parking lot, pulled off our shoes and jokingly yelled "help ussss" to cars passing by even though we had a shuttle on the way. Finally the Budget Inn van pulled up and took us to the motel. The driver had on some sort of old timey music as we drove through the windy mountain roads towards town and I leaned my head against the window and watched the houses go by.
We checked into our room and then immediately went to Rite Aid, bought some razors, shampoo, conditioner and body wash because Budget Inn bar soap just doesn't cut it. Then we walked to Dairy Queen- I got a bacon cheeseburger, chicken fingers, fries, Diet Coke and a blizzard. When the food came out I thought I might be in heaven.
Back to the hotel we went to shower and shave. Town chores are endless and next was laundry. There was no detergent so we used some questionable white powder from a styrofoam cup sitting on a shelf and some of Sparky's Dr. Bronners soap. I sat in the hot laundry room in my puffy and shorts talking to Sparky while we waited for our clothes to dry. Knope and I finally went to the room and relaxed until we all went out to dinner at Barney's Tap and Grill around 7. None of us had remembered it was St. Patrick's Day until we walked in and were served green beers. I ate another bacon cheeseburger, sweet potato fries, 2 green Yuenglings, a chocolate bar, and banana pudding. I've never laughed so much or felt so comfortable around people I'd just met in my entire life. We all walked back to the motel stuffed with food and alcohol while the sky lit up with lightning. Laid in bed and watched TV the rest of the night. Resupply and zero tomorrow.
